Sump Pump Installation

What is a sump pump?

It is a device that is used to pump excess water out of your basement. Often installed in a small pit where the water is directed to, the sump pump expels water and prevents the basement from flooding.

How does it work?

Sump pumps use a flood protection system that directs the water to the sump pump pit. The pump releases water in a designated area which prevents water from flooding your basement. As it cannot function without power, during power outages caused by severe thunderstorms, flooding can be big concern. Due to this, you will need an alternate power source to keep your sump pump running when there is a power outage.

Types of Pumps:

There are two main types of sump pumps:

  • Pedestal Pumps

Pedestal sump pumps have a motor attached to a post that is located outside of the sump pit. While the more economical option and easier to maintain and repair, they are prone to malfunction as water often gets sucked up the pump and can cause damage.

  • Submersible Pumps

Submersible pumps are located at the bottom of the sump pump pit, sitting below the water line. The pump is triggered when the water rises above it. The more expensive option, it works by filtering out debris. A main drawback is that it offers less accessibility.

Benefits of Sump Pumps:

  • Prevents damage caused by flooding in the basement
  • Keeps structural integrity of the home’s foundation intact
  • Minimizes moisture and mould in the basement
  • Increases the property value
